JOB TITLE: Medical Librarian/Resource Manager

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Assessment, the Medical Librarian/Resource Manager at The Valley College of Osteopathic Medicine plays a vital role in advancing the mission of The Valley COM. As a key resource for evidence-based osteopathic medical education, clinical practice, and research, the librarian brings specialized expertise in library and information sciences to support institutional and departmental goals. This role ensures access to current biomedical literature and osteopathic resources by curating both digital and print collections aligned with the core philosophy of osteopathic principles and practices. Additionally, the librarian empowers faculty, students, and clinicians with advanced information literacy skills, fostering scholarly inquiry, and lifelong learning. Through cross-departmental collaboration, the Medical Librarian/Resource Manager contributes to curriculum design, enhances scholarly output, and strengthens institutional knowledge management.

SPECIFIC/KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Mission Driven:

  • Provide support through expert reference services and literature searches for faculty, students, and clinicians.
  • Support systematic reviews, grant proposals, and scholarly publishing through advanced database navigation and citation management.
  • Serve on committees and actively participate in service engagements as needed by The Valley COM.

 

 

 

 

 

Leadership and Advisory:

  • Support a culture of academic excellence, collaboration, community and professional development by procuring library collections, study resources, providing library services, informatics and research alerts tailored to ensure mission aligned excellence of The Valley COM.

Curriculum Development & Instruction:

  • Collaborate with faculty and staff on design and delivery of instructional sessions on evidence-based practice, research methodology, and information literacy across all four years of the curriculum.
  • Collaborate with faculty to embed library resources and training across all four years of the curriculum.
  • Develop online learning modules and guides using platforms like LibGuides or LMS tools

Evaluation/Assessment:

  • Collaborate with the students, staff and faculty under the support of the Associate Dean, Academic Affairs and Assessment and the Curriculum Committee to ensure effectiveness of the library resources and services through ongoing assessment and quality improvement efforts.

Professional Development:

  • Engage with the faculty and staff leading professional development charges and, under the support of the Associate Dean, Academic Affairs and Assessment, identify and provide training and professional development applicable to faculty, staff, clinical partners and students.

 

Student Support Services & Mentorship:

  • Mentor and support students in their academic and professional development, including scholarly activities.

 

Collaboration:

  • Work collaboratively within the COM and external clinical and community partners as appropriate and as supported by the Associate Dean, Academic Affairs and Assessment.
  • Organize workshops, exhibits, and outreach events to promote library services.

 

Research & Innovation:

  • Participate in professional development opportunities to strengthen knowledge and skills regarding research and scholarly activity.
  • Promote emerging technologies such as AI-assisted search tools, data visualization platforms, and digital repositories.
  • Support integration of clinical decision support tools and mobile access to library resources.
  • Lead initiatives in digital archiving, open access, and institutional repositories.

 

Accreditation, Quality and Compliance:

  • Support accreditation standards and regulatory requirements to maintain the highest quality of education and experience.

 

Strategic Planning and Development:

  • Contribute to the strategic planning and vision of the COM, identifying opportunities for growth and innovation that promote the mission of The Valley COM.

 

General:

  • Other duties as assigned

                                                
QUALIFICATION(S):

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Demonstrated experience in library services within higher education or health professions education environments or background in supporting library services across academic or health professions institutions.
